Walk 9A:- Berowra to Cowan At A Glance

Route Summary:- This walk follows part of the Great North Walk and is mostly on walking tracks. It goes for about 0.6 km along Berowra streets to the track head, then 0.8 km. down on track to a fire trail and for 1.8 km. along this to another walking track that reaches Berowra Waters after about 2.2 km. where about 350m along a dead end public road to resumption of walking track that goes twice steeply up and down for the next 6.5 km to Cowan Station.

Negatives:- Track washed out in places

Length:- 11.8 km

Grade:- Medium to Hard; steep rocky ascents

Weather:_All weather except if Joe Crofts Creek in flood

Berowra to Cowan via Berowra Waters

0.00/0.00      Berowra Station; start of walk; cross the Pacific Highway on lights and turn left; follow the Highway to Berowra Waters Road at the next traffic lights

0.25/0.02       At Berowra Waters Road; turn right and follow this for about 500 meters to the       second roundabout

0.63/0.06      At the second roundabout go left at Crowley St and cross it within 25 m of the roundabout to the start of Benowie Walking Track and signage:- ‘Berowra Station 750 m’ back track; ‘Crosslands 5.8 km’ straight ahead on track down; follow track down

1.43/0.22       After crossing two minor creeks, walking pad intersects service road; turn right and follow service road.

1.57/0.25      Road junction with concrete/ bitumen service road joining from right; ignore this; Signage board on left:- ‘Great North Walk’ ( not the main G.N. walk- an access track) ; ‘Crosslands 3.8 km’ and ‘Berowra Waters 3.5 km’ straight ahead; ‘Berowra Station 1.5 km’ back track; continue straight on service road.

2.50/0.36      Track junction on left and signage :- ‘Great North Walk’ ( this is now the real G N Walk- it comes up from Crosslands on left track); ‘Crosslands 3.7 km’ walking pad on left; ‘Berowra Station 2 km’ back track and ‘Berowra Waters 3.4 km’ along service road straight ahead; go straight

2.75/0.39       Service trail passes fenced Naa Bardu lookout on left; great views of Berowra Creek

3.16/0.44      Track junction with sign board on right:- ‘Berowra Heights’ straight ahead on service road; ‘Berowra Waters’ along walking pad on left; go left and follow steps down to tributary creek crossing; continue of walking pad

3.66/0.55       Track junction at top of ridge; walking pad joins from right; clearing; picnic area; continue straight on GNW arrowed post

5.18/1.21      At Berowra Waters; track intersects sealed road leading directly onto car ferry on left; signage:- ‘Berowra Station 5.4 km’ back track; ‘Cowan 8 km’ straight on; there is a bubbler and tap left hand side of track about 15 m back, before its intersection with the ferry road; public toilets and another tap are located near the picnic tables in front on right after crossing the ferry road; continue straight on along sealed road perpendicular to ferry road with Berowra Creek on left

5.54/1.26       Walk past parking area on right; sealed road becomes gravel road; follow this to       its turning circle, then continue on walking track

6.03/1.33       Walking track turns right away from Berowra creek up timber steps to signage:- ‘Cowan 7 km’ and ‘Brooklyn 18 km’ both straight ahead up stone steps

6.29/1.43      Ridge top after continuous climb up; camping area with excellent views

6.66/1.51       Pristine Deep Bay Creek crossing

7.11/2.09       Main plateau ridge; ascent fairly difficult due to steep uneven track

7.37/2.16       Track junction; ignore track on left; go straight

7.58/2.19      Major track junction and camping area with fire place on right; signage on left :- ‘Turner Rd Berowra’ straight on, ‘Berowra Waters 3.5 km’ back track and ‘Cowan Station 4.5 km’ left track; go left to Cowan

7.79/2.23       Track cross roads; track on right also goes to Turner Road, Berowra; go straight ahead on arrowed post

9.12/2.46      Joe Crofts Creek crossing; this is a larger creek with good water flow

9.50/3.03       Top of steep climb; mostly to gently undulating flat from here

9.72/3.10       View point at very top of ridge

10.22/3.16    Track junction with service road for power lines above; go left, walk under power lines for about 30 m, then turn left at arrowed post back onto walking track

10.51/3.20    Walking track crosses vehicular gravel service road; signage:- ‘Cowan 1 km’ .

11.34/3.30    Walking track exits at service trail; go left and follow service trail to exit at the old Pacific Highway

11.72/3.36    At old Pacific Highway; cross to Cowan Station straight ahead

11.79/3.37    At Cowan Station; end of walk
