Walk 36 D:- Heathcote to Engadine via Yalla Ridge At A Glance

Route Summary:- This relatively short walk goes down to Kangaroo Creek on the Karloo Track , then on a very faint track along Kangaroo Creek to Yalla Ridge, then climbs up on Yalla Ridge and goes beyond the ridge on compass bearing to intersect the Engadine Track and follows this to Engadine.

Heathcote to Engadine via Yalla Ridge

0.00/0.00      Heathcote Railway Station; leave platform on eastern (National Park)             side; cross car park to Wilson Parade; turn right and follow Wilson Parade for about 100 meters to a sign board indicating Karloo Track on left; (On sign:- Uloola Falls 5 km; Karloo Pool 2.5 km, Audley 9 km) take this track that initially follows the rear fence line of the Rural Bushfire Depot and houses; there are several sub-parallel track that merge into one.

0.33/0/04     After about 200 meters another (new) sign board indicates Karloo Track ; veer right to leave main track; follow Karloo Track

0.82/0.12       Heathcote Creek Crossing

2.33/0.37      Karloo Track at Kangaroo Creek with Karloo Pool on left; turn left and walk along rock shelf next to pool with pool on you right; at downstream end of pool follow walking track marked with yellow lines and arrows

2.76/0.48       End of yellow markings but track still reasonably easy to follow, either along rock platforms in Creek bed or within 10 m. of Creek

3.49/1.03       Track junction with Bottle Forest Track up on left, marked by single yellow arrow on rock.; from here retrace back for about 15 m. to an easy crossing of Kangaroo Creek on wide rock outcrop.

3.51/1.06       At Creek crossing, then turn left and walk downstream along K. Creek, Creek now on your left, mostly on wide rock platforms with some scrambling over boulders, but stay within 10 m. of Creek.

3.79/1.17       Upstream end of large pool.

3.91/1.20       Downstream end of large pool; faint walking pad- follow this as it occurs intermittently as you continue along right bank, with K. Ck. On left.

4.59/1.34       Tributary creek/gully joins from right with Yalla Ridge now on left on the other side of K. Ck. at a sharp bend of K. Ck. To the left; walk about 30 m. further after crossing the gully and re-cross K.Ck on wide sandstone outcrop near the apex of the sharp K.Ck. bend.

4.66/1.37      Middle of K.Ck.; after crossing, turn left and walk upstream for a few meters to the middle of Yalla Ridge and turn right, away from K.Ck and follow Yalla Ridge up along its spine through fairly thick undergrowth and climbing up five or six cliffs up to 5 m high.

5.48/2.11       On massive undulating sandstone outcrop for the next 40-50 m.; end of identifiable Yalla Ridge spine ; now head WNW on compass bearing through flatter terrain.

5.98/2.31       Now on much more open, gently rising terrain with grassy undergrowth and stands of Gymea Lilly; much easier walking; continue with compass bearing but also aim for high point ahead.

6.25/2.37       Intersection with Engadine Track at timber signage:- ‘ Audley’ downhill to the right; the sign was possibly placed here to mark the start of the off-track access to Yalla Ridge? Turn left and follow the Engadine Track gently uphill to a major track junction and clearing

6.47/2.40      Track junction with firetrail and signage:- ‘Audley’ track back; ‘Heathcote’ crosses fire trail at right angles; no directions for Engadine; take the Heathcote track, walk past the ‘no bicycles’ sign

6.73/2.44       Track junction with firetrail and signage:- ‘Engadine’ track crosses firetrail at right angles to ‘No bicycles’ sign

6.93/2.47       Track crosses prominent creek on sandstone outcrop

7.60/2.55      Track junction with firetrail; cross at right angles and follow walking track with ‘No Bicycles’ sign

7.85/2.59       Track crosses minor creek

8.08/3.02      Track junction with bicycle track and signage:- Audley 5.3 km’ on track back; ‘Engadine 0.7 km’ straight ahead but turn right and follow bike track for about 25m to a walking track on the left with signage:-Walkers Only’

8.21/3.04       Track junction with firetrail and signage:- Engadine’ on timber post; cross firetrail at right angles

8.54/3.09       Multiple track junction with signage:-Audley 5.8 km’ back; track on left is ‘closed’ ; track on right ‘bicycles’; go straight past sign:- Engadine 0.2 km’ past stormwater dam beside railway line on left

8.64/3.10       Track junction with signage :- ‘Audley’ back; turn left here with Engadine Station straight in front

8.76/3.12      Engadine Railway Station; end of walk
